The desert winds have really beat us up this week, but they did begin to settle down about mid-afternoon Friday. That was good because our friends Tom and Jennifer were hosting an outdoor ‘appy party’ for another couple who are heading home this weekend. By the time we walked a few sites down to Tom and Jennifer’s, just after 4pm, the winds had stopped and it was quite comfortable sitting outside.
We weren’t at the party long before a group of folks were crowded around looking at something hidden high up in the Oleander hedge that separates sites here at the Sands. When I went over to see what everyone was looking at, I was told it was a Roadrunner’s nest.
There are Roadrunners all over the washes here at the Sands and quite often they will come right up close looking for food. I’d never seen a nest before and had no idea they made them so high off the ground.
The party was a lot of fun, the food was great and it was nice to be able to sit outside again in the late afternoon without getting blown away. Paulette also got to meet Trent and Teresa as she was out when they came over for a visit on Thursday morning. We were back home by 6pm as once the sun started to set behind Mt. Jacinto, it starts to cool off pretty fast. At first, most folks were wearing t-shirts or short sleeved shirts but it wasn’t long before a few jackets and sweatshirts started to appear.
Everyone had a good time, so thanks again Tom and Jennifer for a wonderful afternoon!
Other than the afternoon party, it was another quiet day for me. The only accomplishment I can claim is finishing the 985 page book Fall of Giants by Ken Follett.
I like books that combine fiction with actual history and this one sure did that as it it follows the fates of five interrelated families-American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh-as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage.
The coincidences that bring all these families together in this book are pretty farfetched but that’s the fiction part of it.
Have a great Saturday, and thanks again for visiting!

Glad the winds stopped for a while, now if we could get the rain and fog to stop for a while in Florida!
ReplyDeleteGlad the winds settled down for you!! Nick Russell's blog talked about the desert winds in Arizona this week too!!
ReplyDeleteWE are getting hail and rain with our winds out here. Hope you have clear skies now for awhile, be safe out there. Sam & Donna...
ReplyDeleteThat is an "appy hour?" It looks like a buffet table in a restaurant. WOW!
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy reading fiction/fact books. I have this one on my list. I also have about 200 other books on the list...hehe
Enjoy your nice weather.

At least you're far away from the Tornadoes. Yikes, I was just reading about the nastiness in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
ReplyDeleteI hear that we're getting the tale end in Ontario. High winds, that kind of thing.
Didn't know about the roadrunner's nests. Somehow I thought they'd build their nests on the ground, since that's where they like to run.
Who knew?
Please don't flame me, but when I mentioned the Tornadoes, I forgot about Kansas, Missouri, Alabama...
ReplyDeleteThey're probably more...
Over here we have seen very few roadrunners this year. I guess they need to build their nests high up, otherwise the snakes would find them too easily.
ReplyDeleteNice your winds stopped early our kept at it for another few hours here in Benson AZ. Looks like those appys, just might replace supper.
ReplyDeleteNice gathering of like minder RVers. Sure glad the winds have abated - or that they will abate.
ReplyDeleteOur wind has died down also which is sure nice. Appy hour - I like that idea. I've always like Ken Follett so I'll have to get this book on my Nook.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to get that book! Sounds like it's right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm reading Spencerville, by Nelson DeMille..I love DeMille and it's one of his I haven't read..I intend to put Ken Follet's book on my must reads...Windy hear on the lake today too!!
ReplyDeleteGlad the weather is good and the winds calmer. I have read a couple Ken Follet books but this one looks daunting but I may have to give it a read.
ReplyDeleteSure glad the wind dies down for your gathering. Otherwise those yummy looking deviled eggs might had been kinda gritty! It's 61 and sunny here today - just beautiful, but the weather report is calling for rain and snow mixed by Tuesday. SIGH! But it is gradually getting nicer around here. Probably about like B.C.
ReplyDeleteI played hide and seek with a roadrunner trying to get its photo. First on the roof of the park model next door then on the brick wall behind our fifth wheel. Then on our roof. Never got a photo beep beep!!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll get Fall of Giants, I haven't read that one. I love LOTS of pages when it's a really good book. Pillars of the Earth is another great, very long Ken Follett book.
ReplyDeleteThat appy spread looks so good! Glad the winds died down for you all. :)
