What The Heck Happened Here Anyway – Yikes?

We had another very quiet Sunday here at the Sands.  A trip to Costco to pick up a few supplies was about the only thing we did at all.  Golf was off for me as it was a bit too gusty out there.  I did get a few comments saying I had some kind of ‘Text Enhancement’ but that was showing up on my blog.

If you think you’re computer may be infected with ‘Text Enhancement’ malware, the best and easiest way to get rid of it is to download and run the free Malware Bytes AntiMalware

I tested that out and couldn’t find anything wrong.  I checked my site from two other computers and I couldn’t replicate the problem.  Just to be sure, I did a complete sweep of my system, ran some Malware software and disabled a few unnecessary Chrome extensions.  So, if anyone should happen to see this problem while leaving a comment please let me know and I’ll check it out further.

1965 at 21, I was thin, had dark hair, a nice ‘57 Chevy – what the heck happened?Rick

Now, back to the title of this post – ‘What the Heck Happened’?  While I was working on my computer yesterday, I happened to run across a few old archival photos featuring yours truly.  One, in particular caught my eye as it showed me at 21 yrs. old with a cast on my right leg.  I had broken my leg while playing hockey and I had that horrible above the knee cast on for a full six months.  Needless to say that was the end of my hockey playing days!

What a difference a mere 46 years makes!  What the heck!!IMG_0399

It wasn’t the greatest time to break my leg either as I had just started my first job as a Computer Operator only 4 months earlier.  Luckily, I was still able to move around the office, operate all the equipment and I never missed a beat – for the next 35 years!  In fact, since I broke my leg on a Thursday night, I missed work on Friday, but was back on the job first thing Monday morning – those were the days.

Another thing that was very fortunate for me was that I had just bought my ‘57 Chevy a few months after getting my new job and it had an automatic transmission.  It had a front bench seat so I was able to put my right ‘cast leg’ up on the seat and drive using my left foot for the gas and brake.  I even got stopped by a police officer one day for rolling through a stop sign.  He just looked at my leg and said “is that legal”?  I really didn’t know but he let me off with a warning for the stop sign violation and just said to “take it easy”!

Luckily, I only found one more old photo on my computer and that was my high school graduation picture.  At the time I had just turned 17 yrs. old and there wasn’t a grey hair on my head.  I think my collar size was about 14 or maybe even less.  Waist size?  We won’t even go there.

Feeling totally depressed, I’m signing off for tonight and going to bed to read!!

Have a great Monday, and thanks again for visiting!

  1. Well, getting older kinda sucks, but it's sure better than the "alternative".
    Awesome '57 by the way.

  2. You started out wih a 57, me with a 55, I have had a broken leg, foot, two arms and a wrist. Wow parallel universes, but all of them were worth it except the last when I was 60 years old and carrying a box at work and forgot about one step to the parking lot. what a sudden stop. I did get a camo cast on that one that was wearable in the shower, now that is progress.Hey be safe out there, and watch out for low leaping kangeroo's. Sam & Donna..

  8. How is it that we really don't think we have changed much over the years until you see side by side photos.

You have been a computer Geek for many years Rick. lol.

Oh by the way when you were 21 I was 2. I just thought I would through that in.

  10. After seeing all your pictures and comments about the Sands, we are considering spending 6 weeks or so there next year. Was wondering how close grocery stores are. I noticed you mentioned a Costco, but we do not shop there as there aren't any in Okla.

  12. My first car was a '53 Chevy BelAir- got it in '58, drove it on our honeymoon in '60, traded it in in '61 for a Rambler wagon with pushbutton gearshift. I ever had a broken bone. Guess you and I don't have a thing in common, Rick. (My Dad and Mom borrowed the Rambler to try it out as an overnight sleeper. They loved it until the next morning, a holiday morning, when they tried to drive down off the top of Mount Diablo in California. The pushbottons all fell out! My Dad, never a handy man with mechanical things, finally got the pushbuttons all back in place and got down off the mountain.)

  13. I have never understood the distaste for old pictures of one's self. Aging is universal (unless you die young), it happens to us all and what's the big deal?

Then again, I was never a cutie in high school, so I guess if I get uglier as I age it's no big deal. :-)

Frankly, you don't look so badly preserved at all ... but then I'm just a guy -- what do I know.

    Love the traffic stop story!

  15. Rick have you seen the pics making the rounds of people like Clint Eastwood, Arnold, Jack Nicholson? They have a then and now and believe me you look much better now than they do. anyway how would want to look the same as they did at 21? Not the character in a 21 year old face that there is in 50+

  16. You're looking good to me (don't mention this to Paulette). And at least I didn't say, "You look good for your age."

  19. I also get depressed looking back at those pictures but it's because other than the gray hair, I really haven't changed all that much. Still short, still fat, so I can't even say - what happened. Great looking car though. Mine was a 59 Impala. Boy I miss that car.

  20. Nice retrospective on your evolution these past years. To reflect is good...but the present and future is the only thing we can control.

Love the '57 Chevy. It's one of the most 'in demand' classic cars.

  22. I had that text enhancer stuff clam onto my browser as well. I disabled it by going into wrench tools extensions and disabling everything until it went away. Then I uninstalled the offending extension....

  23. Fun post Rick. I always enjoy looking back, but don't regret where I am now. Life is great and white hair is a mark of distinction. No, really, it's true (tee-hee)!!! Love that '57 Chevy. My first was a '53 Chevy (boring), but then I had a '59 and later a 1963 Black Impala hardtop with four on the floor and could that baby roll! I could burn rubber in three gears. I got stopped one time for speeding but I cried and he let me off. Yes, I slowed down after that.

  24. Fun sometimes just to remind ourselves of our pasts and see where we have come to today. Nice looking 57 you had. My first was a 65 Austin Mini.

  28. I'm playing catch up today with my blog reading, and just read your post about the new word verification.

I haven't been commenting as much the last month, partly due to the connections here, and just noticed the change. Today is the first time I used it, and I just guessed at one of the words - got it right, but I don't think I'll bother the next time. I'll change my comment to let them know it's too hard to comment on their blog, but I'll check from time to time to see if they have changed their settings.

For those of us who read a LOT of blogs on a regular basis and comment on a lot of them, making that process harder and more time consuming is really dumb. Who wants the irritation?

I think you're even more handsome today than when you were a kid. :)

  31. Amazing what a few years will do, right? And I have to tell you, my Charley had a 57 Chevy also. It was black and also had the bench seat. As a matter of fact that is the car he and I dated in!!

He wishes often that he still had that car!!

  32. The first thing that jumps out at me from the Malware message is the mis spelled "your" as "you're" That to me is always an indicator of a scam/spam. My spell radar and pressure gauge go right into the red!

  33. My first car was just like yours, except mine had a V-8...Cost me $75 or $150. back in 1966. My memory seems to be fading.....
