The headline says it all. Another great day here in Desert Hot Springs. Days like this when we mostly just take it easy are pretty nice but they sure don’t do much providing interesting blogging material. It’s way too hot to go out into the desert on hikes and besides, we’re in a fantastic resort here at the Sands so we’re just taking full advantage of all the things to do right here!
This very old Earthenware Pottery Bowl was a score! Paulette paid $5 ![]()
We started the day off with one of our favourite events here at the Sands RV Resort – the bi-weekly pancake breakfast. It features all you can eat pancakes as well as sausages, scrambled eggs and coffee for only $4 per person. The breakfast is so popular now that they’ve moved the starting time from 8am to 7:30am to accommodate all the folks who attend. Paulette and I were there bright and early Saturday morning.
The inside of the bowl – the Grapefruit in the above pic were free!![]()
After breakfast, we decided to do our usual Saturday morning drive around in Palm Springs and perhaps hit a few garage sales if we happened to run across any. Good thing we did because it was a ‘bonanza’ day for Paulette. She managed to pick up 3 or 4 items that she officially classified as ‘scores’! A ‘score’ is about as good as it gets when it comes to garage sales and thrift stores. If this keeps up I’m going to have to ‘score’ a utility trailer to haul all this stuff across the border.
This old bowl even had a few gouges and nicks in it to add some character!![]()
Paulette was just thrilled with the Earthenware Bowl buy as she’s been looking for one like it for years. The guy selling it was asking $10 and Paulette asked if he would “take $5” – he did. If I did that, the guy would probably punch me in the mouth! As a bonus, we got a whole bag of Grapefruit that we picked off a tree next door. The owner was there, supplied the bags and said “help yourselves, we can’t eat all of this grapefruit ourselves”! What a deal.
Another ‘score’ was this big white platter – also $5![]()
Another item Paulette was thrilled with was the white platter shown above which she picked up for $5. I’m just reporting these deals and trying to do my best to make them sound exciting but I’m just not “feelin’ it” if you know what I mean. A bowl and a platter – ‘nuff said. In other GS’ing news Paulette picked up a nice blazer and a peasant blouse to go with it for only 50 cents each. Unbelievable!
We were back at the Sands by lunchtime and it wasn’t long before I was on my way to the golf course. There was a slight breeze out there so it was pretty comfortable. That was about it for our Saturday – not very exciting, but not too shabby either!
Have a great Sunday, and thanks again for visiting!

It's always great to find a bargain.

ReplyDeleteBut you made your spouse happy with her great finds and that makes it all worthwhile. Always remember that - it's very important.
ReplyDeleteBetter a ho-hum day than one fraught with problems. I would have been soaking in the pool waiting for you to get you golf game done. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna..
ReplyDeleteI want to go garage sale-ing with Paulette one of these days!
ReplyDeletePaulette had a productive garage sale day.
ReplyDeleteNice day for golf.
Good thing for the truck, pulling the fiver, cause you can always find room in the truck box for all those gems Paulette is collecting. LOL
I have to agree with Paulette. It was a score. I love those earthenware bowls.
ReplyDeleteIsn't retirement just GREAT! ~wheresweaver
ReplyDeleteSounds pretty good to me ~ GREAT scores... lol
ReplyDeleteHave fun & Travel safe
Donna
Great finds! Hope your golf game was just as great.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the best "score" of the day was the fresh picked grapefruit! Nothing better than fresh off the tree citrus!
ReplyDeleteI do like the white like the white platter too. Tell Paulette I have lots of "scores" for her that I'll sell her cheap. (Lots of knicked and scratched bowls.)
Boy, Rick, what a find Paulette made! I collect RRP in the wheat pattern--will leave them to my Granddaughters.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not mistaken what Paulette got is Yellowware made by RRP Co. in Ohio. We all probably saw it in our Mother's or Grandmother's kitchens. What makes it great is that it's so usable!
These bowls are getting harder and harder to find in flea markets and "junk" stores because people realize their value, now.
I got a dirty old bottle, once, that among other writing said "used for display only" for 50 cents. I brought it home and looked it up on the web and found that it is worth $500. I was so excited. My husband looked, scratched his head, and said, who's going to buy it though? We both laughed-so true.
I made sure to tell my kids, otherwise it would wind up in the trash, I'm sure--still may!
I once found a 75 year old baby book with a lock of hair, date of birth and pictures of a Mother holding her child in perfect condition, buried in a pile of old linens. It was complete with names of nurses and doctors, gifts, etc. I paid $3. for it, came home and took a chance. I looked up the name of the baby who happened to still be in the same town in Ohio. I spoke to him--he was very leery of my call. He had no idea of the books existence. My husband fedexed it to him, and he called us the next day--said he didn't have any pictures of his Mother, and that he would pass it to his son--he was very happy.
Well, I got gabby this morning, didn't I--sorry about that. Anyway, congratulate Paulette on her find.
You guys are in a fantastic area to go to garage sales! I am envious! What great finds!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. It's a bowl and a platter..ho hum. :)
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with "oh hummmmmmm..."kind of days as far as I am concerned!
ReplyDeleteThe bowl is definitely a score. I gave up all that stuff when we went FT but if I still had a S&B with a big kitchen that is a bowl I would love to have.
ReplyDeleteThe bowl is great, I love the platter !!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe when you get back YOU can have the garage sale and sell all these great things for twice the price you bought them for! LOL
Sorry it's so hot there :) (not)
Enjoy!!!!
That pancake breakfast sounds like a good way to start ones Saturday. Sure some nice looking grapefruit. Just never know what you are going to find at those garage sales. Have a great Sunday.
ReplyDeleteGood job getting excited about those dishes! And the blazer and blouse - WOWWIE WOW! Annie sometimes finds great bargains like an automatic drobiggular cordless marchipal, and I get all excited in exactly the same way you did.
ReplyDeleteI don't want you to get over-jealous, but Annie is making me vegan French toast right now, and it's better than any French toast I've eaten in my life. And, I didn't have to get up at 7:30 for it!

The Good Luck Duck
We could sure use a few days like that!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Paulette -- love garage sales & thrift stores!
ReplyDeleteMost definitely a score! I may have to send my husband your way for some husband training. He makes such a fuss about stopping at garage sales, and even more if I buy something that it just isn't worth the trouble. You however are SO GOOD!
ReplyDeleteReading all the comments was almost as much fun as reading the post!! Sure enjoy how we all think just a little bit differently. But we all agree - great weather and blue skies can't be beat!
ReplyDeleteMost of our decor in our home is from Goodwill or a garage sale...also most of my clothing...I love a great score!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, those scores were worth the trip. Both the bowl and platter were a good find. This is not something that you would find on-line (which is where I do my shopping!!)... :)
ReplyDeleteTell Paulette good job!!
I suspect when I stop full-timing I might do some garage sale shopping. It is fun to find that special thing for a good price, and I sold all my stuff, so I'll have to replace what I need.
ReplyDeleteBut for now, in my little rig I just don't have room. In fact I've already started leaving things by the dumpsters where I stay - good stuff, but I'm not using them, and I'm loving the extra space. I love going back later and seeing all the stuff gone. Someone else is enjoying it.
OH, yes, your bowl and platter
ReplyDeleteare great deals! Don't be put off
by the non collectors...you did
real good !! lol
